SMPS DC Local Government Procurement Event Recap

Posted on Jun. 8, 2022  /  Event Recap  /  0

The SMPS DC Chapter Procurement Committee held a local county government luncheon at the Tower Club in Tysons. We were honored to have representatives from Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Fairfax County, and Prince William County all presenting on their jurisdiction’s upcoming opportunities.

The event was moderated by Gold Sponsor representative and Procurement Committee member Joe Monahan from Alpha Corporation. He first introduced David Dise, the Director of General Services for Montgomery County. Mr. Dise not only spoke about upcoming opportunities with Montgomery County for the AEC community, but reiterated the importance of a well-put-together proposal. He mentioned that it’s always the best proposal that wins, not necessarily the best company. After Mr. Dise spoke, his Maryland compatriot Michael Brown, Deputy Director of the Office of Central Services, addressed the audience. Along with presenting the upcoming opportunities within his county, Mr. Brown echoed the importance of proposals and mentioned the requirement of being registered with the county. He warned of examples of firms going through the proposal submission process only to be rejected because of this oversight.

After the Maryland counties presented, the Virginia counties had their turn to share. Abuelgasim Elfacki, RA, from Fairfax County, a Project Coordinator with the Building Design and Construction Division of DPWES was first. He talked about the procurement process within Fairfax County, breaking down how the county divides the AEC procurement into different departments, including the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES), the Department of Transportation (FCDOT) and the Park Authority (FCPA), among others. He also covered what they are currently working on and upcoming projects that would be of interest to the group. Last but certainly not least was Eric Brunner, PE from Prince William County, the Assistant Director of Facilities Construction Management. He discussed his role and how the Facilities Construction Management Division fits within the Facilities and Fleet Management department. He then went on to cover some upcoming opportunities in-depth, going over project budgets, milestones, and goals.

The event was well attended being the first in-person event for the chapter in some time. It was great to network with colleagues again, eat a delicious lunch, and learn some valuable information about what’s coming up for these localities. Suzanne Swistak closed out the luncheon with a thank you to our sponsors and speakers and a quick overview of the upcoming SMPS DC events.
