A Night to Remember: Celebrating 40 Years of SMPS DC

Posted on Nov. 8, 2022  /  0

SMPS DC is an extraordinary organization with so many people with their own AEC marketing journey’s to share and when you bring us all together we are a force of nature. This organization allows us to learn together, grow together, and make a difference at our firms together all through marketing leadership. To see all of us come together to celebrate was truly a night to remember, so thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us.

I want to thank our amazing 2022-2023 Board of Directors for leading us through this milestone year for our chapter. Without their hardwork and dedication to our membership none of this could be possible. Thank you to Abby Harrington, President Elect; Kim Metzinger, Past President; Jason Moskowitz, Treasurer; Courtney Messick, Secretary; Falynn Schmidt, Career Advancement; Laura Ewan, Chapter Advisor; Kaitlyn Sweigard, Communications; Nick Lane, Education; Karen Cotton, Member Engagement; Suzanne Swistak, Procurement; Stephanie Murdoch, PRT-SMRT; and a very special thank you to Christine Heffernan our Director of Special Events who planned our 40th Celebration flawlessly.

Our 40th anniversary celebration would not have been complete without the help of our event sponsors for the evening so a special thank you and shout out to the following firms for supporting SMPS DC: Ayers Saint Gross, CMTA, Davis Construction, GCS-SIGAL, GHT Limited, Gilbane, Hickok Cole, Novel Communications, and WSP.

As per our tradition, we celebrated the awards of two individuals that have offered exceptional volunteer service to the chapter. The first is the Rising Star Award—the Rising Star recognizes chapter members with fewer than five years of experience who have shown dedication to our chapter through volunteerism and committee involvement. This year’s recipient is an incredibly creative, energetic, and motivated marketer who is widely respected both within their company and the SMPS DC community. They have made significant contributions to our chapter through their involvement in the Communications Committee, developing social media posts and content for the chapter, as well as their involvement in the Special Events Committee, helping plan events just like this one. They also participated in the Guru Guidance program, connecting with a mentor and peers, having meaningful discussions that advance our profession.

This person is a staple at nearly every event for the chapter, always willing to manage registration tables, greet new members, and make everyone feel a part of our community. In 2022, the chapter proudly recognized Anya Walker of GHT Limited with the Rising Star Award.

One of our chapter’s oldest traditions and most prestigious honors is the Ginny Solomon Golden Tuba Award. It recognizes a current chapter member whose accomplishments and impact on our profession are something for us all to aspire to and admire.

Winners are selected based on their high standards of marketing excellence, leadership in the community, contribution to firm marketing efforts, creativity in the field of marketing, and outstanding contributions to the DC chapter.

Serving as Chapter President and Chapter Advisor; leading the CPSM boot camp and Chapter Leadership Symposium; supporting the education committee, membership committee, and SMRT/PRT committee; planning conferences regionally and nationally; serving as a Marketing Communications Award juror; and presenting at national eventsour 2022 Ginny Solomon Golden Tuba Award WinnerLaura Ewan of Hickok Cole truly does it all!

A few quotes from fellow colleagues on Laura’s impact on our chapter and the people that make our chapter special:

“If SMPS DC had a dozen Lauras, we'd have 1,000 members and somehow have legislated that all AEC firms should be led by marketers.” - Jen McGovern

“Laura has consistently inspired me to be a better marketer, leader, thinker, contributor to workplace wellbeing, and advocate for marketers.” - Heather Davis

“CPSM cheerleader, turned mentor, turned friend; she has not only been a pillar for our organization but for my professional development as well.” - Koren Stauffer

“Her genuine and serious commitment to professional growth is balanced with warm humor and quick laughter. There are few people in the industry I respect so deeply.” - Jason Moskowitz

“Her love of SMPS is unmatched, and her willingness to push us to constantly think outside the box makes us all better marketers. She is an amazing friend, colleague, and a force to be reckoned with and I am glad that force is always on our side.” - Amy Cuddy

Congratulations to Laura on a very well-deserved recognition!
