Let’s Get To It……
What got you into the AEC industry and what keeps you here?
After college, I moved back east and took a job working for a DC think tank, which was just not for me. I then saw that HITT Contracting was looking for a marketing coordinator, and the rest is history. BTW-that announcement was in the Washington Post in the employment section (the old days of getting newsprint on your fingers as your perused the jobs column)
When and why did you first join SMPS, and what keeps you coming back?
I first joined SMPS in the mid-90’s so that I could learn more about the AEC industry that I was now part of. I then met Alison Carney and Tracy Allen who were also involved and who encouraged me to join a committee. Again, the rest is history!
What advice do you have for our newer SMPS DC members about getting the most out of their membership?
Get involved in a committee, which is a no-brainer, but also focus on building those relationships with your peers. They will be the ones you go to when you need career and life advice. They’ll let you bounce ideas off of them, talk you off the ledge when you’ve had a bad day, grab a drink after work, and generally provide amazing friendship. I have 25+ year relationships with folks that I met early in my career, and I frankly don’t know where I would be without them.
What has been your favorite SMPS DC or SMPS event?
The national conference – Build Business now known as Amplify. What a fantastic place for professional development, learning more about our industry, networking with peers from across the country and generally, the feel of knowing you are part of a huge community of AEC marketing professionals. They’re your people.
What part of the SMPS mission to Advocate, Educate, and Connect most resonates with you and why?
I believe that Connect most resonates with me. I sound like a broken record but it’s those industry connections that you make that will impact your career the most.
What is your favorite SMPS DC memory?
Aside from being Chapter President, I fondly remember receiving the Chapter’s Golden Tuba award. It was a huge shock and I still say, “I’m not worthy!!”
Best work-related advice you’ve ever gotten?
Make yourself available to help others and be sure to pay it forward.
